Recent Natural Disasters

  • Weather in New Jersey and New York, United States
    -Higher winds, flooding and even snow is expected to hit Sandy affected New Jersey. Severe weather in New Jersey shore is forecast.
    -Following the approaching nor'easter, both the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises have cancelled a number of boats.
    -The National Weather Service has issued a coastal-flood advisory and high-wind warning for coastal Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, including Nantucket.
    -Erosion is also expected along the hurricane Sandy hit Jersey coast and the shores of Long Island.
    -Toms River has issued a mandatory evacuation of the Barrier Island for noon Wednesday. Similarly Middletown Township in Monmouth County has also issued a mandatory evacuation from Keansburg to Atlantic Highlands from Route 36 to the bay.
    -Major airlines have cancelled flights in and out of the New York City area.  In New York, police will use their patrol car loudspeakers to warn vulnerable residents about evacuation.
    -The Winter Storm Team has named the current nor’easter Winter Storm Athena.
    -Hurricanes are considered to be a major disaster in New Jersey especially the Jersey Shoreline communities in Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties (Photo: A large ocean pier in the Maryland beach resort of Ocean City destroyed by hurricane Sandy).

  • M 6.3 strong earthquake in Vancouver Island, Canada Region (@ 17 km depth) with epicenter located 186 km SSW of Port Hardy. People of Ucluelet and Tofino will have felt weak shaking of MMI III.

  • M 7.4 massive earthquake Offshore Guatemala (@ 42 km depth) with epicenter located 24 km S of Champerico. Very strong shaking of MMI VII will have felt by the people of Champerico, Suchiate, La Libertad and Ciudad Tecun Uman. People of Ocos and Pueblo Nuevo Tiquisate will have felt strong shaking of MMI VI.   • M 5.5 very strong shallow earthquake in Northwestern Iran (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 51 km NNE of Tabriz. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Ahar, Mincivan, Tabriz, Meghri, Icari and Ordubad. People of Kapan, Khvoy, Ardabil, Orumiyehm and Yeghegnadzor will have felt weak shaking of MMI III.

Erupting Volcanoes: Propocatepetl, Fuego, Reventador, Villarrica, Stromboli, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Erta Ale, Marapi, Semeru, Paluweh, Gamalama, Lokon-Empung, Sakurajima, Ulawun, Yasur, Ambrym, Kizimen, Shiveluch and Kilauea volcano.


Recent Tropical Cyclones
There are no tropical storm activity today.
