Heavy Snowstorm in Japan leaves 6 dead


Heavy Snowstorm in Japan has claimed lives of at least six  people and left 1,400 homes in Tokushima Prefecture without power, Japanese media reported.

Fatalities are from  Toyama, Tokushima and Fukui Prefecture of Japan.

Nearly 200 households in Tokushima Prefecture have been stranded as roads to some communities are blocked,  Japanese state news channel NHK World reported.

About 60 domestic flights have been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

According to the Japan Times, as of 6 p.m. Sunday, 116 cm of snow has been recorded in the Sukayu area of Aomori Prefecture.

Weather officials have urged people to take precautions against avalanches and possible disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency had issued its first heavy snowfall warning for central Tokyo in 13 years in February this year.
