6.2 magnitude earthquake in Alaska shakes Whitehorse, Juneau


May 1, 2017: A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Alaska at 12:31 UTC today, causing power outages in Whitehorse area of Canada.

The earthquake occurred 133 km SW of Whitehorse, Canada and 215 km NW of Juneau, Alaska.

The earthquake was recorded at a shallow depth of 2.2 km tremor lasted about 30 seconds.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), dozens of aftershocks were recorded within two hours, including a large one at about 14:18 UTC, that registered as a 6.3 magnitude.
