Recent Natural Disasters
At least 75 people rescued from flooding in Hancock County of Mississippi
  • Flooding in Pearlington, Mississippi
    -At least 75 people rescued from flooding in Hancock County of Mississippi caused by hurricane Isaac.
    -A mandatory evacuation order was issued earlier for all areas south of 90 in Ocean Springs, Gautier and Pascagoula, Mississippi.
    -Officials dispatched 1,500 National Guard troops to the state's three southern counties, as well as 45 state troopers to ease traffic flow.
    -Tornado in Ocean Springs damaged two houses on East Simmons Bayou in Gulf Park Estates.

    More than 60,000 people evacuated in Louisiana and Mississippi.

  • M 4.0 light shallow earthquake in Iceland (@ 6 km depth) with epicenter located 17 km S Mosfellsbær. It will have well felt by the people of Hafnarfjörður and Reykjavík.

  • M 4.9 moderate earthquake in Chile (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 18km WNW of Arauco. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Curanilahue, Lota and Coronel.

  • M 5.2 moderate shallow earthquake in Indonesia (@ 31 km depth) with epicenter located 34 km E of Amahai. Just a weak tremor will have felt by the people of Sorong, Tual and Ambon.

  • M 4.9 moderate deep earthquake in Peru (@ 138 km depth) with epicenter located 6 km SSW of Campoverde. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Pucallpa, Contamana and Tingo Maria.

Recent Flash Floods
Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Argentina, Australia (River Murray), Botswana (Selinda), Brazil (River Tocantins), Burkina Faso, Cameroon (River Benue), Chad, China (River Mekong, River Huang He and River Brahmaputra), Democratic Republic of the Congo (River Ubangi), Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Honduras, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria (River Benue), Peru (River Ucayali, River Putamayo), Sudan (River Blue Nile), Uruguay, Venezuela (River Orinoco) and Zimbabwe (River Zambezi).
  • Flash floods in Cumbria, England
    -Recent floods have affected more than 100 homes across Cumbria.
    -A road bridge over a tributary of the River Ehen at Beckermet has been closed.
    -The Cumbrian floods of 2009 resulted in a £276m bill.
    -Cumbria is a non-metropolitan county in North West England.

Erupting Volcanoes: Popocatepetl, Fuego, Tungurahua, Villarrica, Etna, Erta Ale, Nyiragongo, Ol Doinyo Lengai, Sakurajima, Semeru, Batu Tara, Dukono, Manam, Ulawun, Yasur, Ambrym, Kilauea and Kizimen volcano.
  • Alaska/Little Sitkin recent volcanic activity
    -A cluster of earthquakes detected at Little Sitkin volcano.
    -Sitkin is located on an uninhabited island and is far from any populated areas. However no eruption has been detected.

  • Hurricane Ileana
    -As of 09:00 UTC, Hurricane Ileana was located 515 km SW of the southern tip of Baja California.
    - Ileana is a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale.
  • Tropical Storm Isaac
    -As of 09:00 UTC, TS Isaac was located 85 km se of Alexandria and 175 km NW of New Orleans, Louisiana.
    -Isaac continues to weaken slowly over land but still producing heavy rains and severe weather.
    -A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Intracoastal City Louisiana to the Mississippi-Alabama border including Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.
  • Tropical Storm Kirk
    -As of 09:00 UTC, TS Kirk was located 1715 km NE of the northern Leeward Islands and 2425 km WSW of the Azores.
    -Kirk is moving toward the northwest near 10 mph.
  • Tropical Storm Tembin
    -As of 09:00 UTC, TS Tembin was located 85 nm south of kunsan ab, south Korea.
