Recent Natural Disasters

  • Severe storms in South America
    -Nine killed in severe storm in Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia across South America.
    -Four soldiers were killed in Asuncion and 14 others were injured. A girl killed in Mariano Roque Alonso.
    -Two killed in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and other two in Uruguay.
    -All together 5,000 homes were destroyed and more than 80 people were injured.
    -10% of Uruguay is having power outage currently.
    -Heavy rainfall and flooding also reported in southern Brazil, northern Argentina and Uruguay.
    -The 1982–83 Paraguay floods caused by  El Nino killed 170 people. It also affected parts of Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia (A car under tree during heavy storms in Montevideo, Uruguay-AP).

  • M 5.4 moderate deep earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines (@ 111 km depth) with epicenter located 47 km SSE of Pondaguitan. Weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by the people of Caburan, Malita and Mati.

  • M 4.9 moderate earthquake in Central Peru (@ 67 km depth) with epicenter located 38 km SSE of Abancay. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Andahuaylas, Cusco and Santa Ana.

  • M 4.5 moderate shallow earthquake Off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 704 km SSW from Banda Aceh. It will have just faintly felt around coastal area.

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Argentina, Australia (Murray and Darling), Brazil (Paraguay, Xingu, Rio Teles Pires, Rio Paranaiba, Madeira and Tocantins), Cameroon (Benue), Chad, China (Mekong and Huang He), Colombia (Japura and Magdelena), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Lukaga), Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria (Niger and Benue), Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania and Venezuela (Orinoco).


Recent Volcanic Activity
Erupting Volcanoes: Fuego, Reventador, Villarrica, Stromboli, Erta Ale, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Sakurajima, Dukono, Semeru, Batu Tara, Manam, Ulawun, Kizimen, Karymsky and Kilauea volcano.
  • Azerbaijan/Mud volcano recent volcanic eruption
    -Mud volcano of Azerbaijan erupted today and lasted for 10-15 minutes.
    -Currently employees of the Azerbaijani Emergency Situations Ministry are at the disaster area.
    -The volcano last erupted in 2010. Out of 800 mud volcanoes in the world, 350 of them are located in Azerbaijan.


Recent Tropical Cyclones
  • Tropical Storm Nadine
    -As of 03:00 UTC, TS Nadine was located 255 km S of Flores in the Azores.
    -Nadine is moving toward the east-northeast near 3 mph. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Azores Islands of Flores, corvo, faial, Pico, sao jorge, graciosa, Terceira, sao Miguel and Santa Maria.


Natural Disaster News
  • Extreme weather in Eastern and northern emirates, United Arab Emirates-Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms reported in parts of the eastern and northern emirates.
    -Flooding also affected parts of Madam, Al Dahid, Falaj Al Mulla, and parts of Al Ain including Al Shouaib and Khatam Al Shiklah.

  • Wildfire in Santa Cruz, California
    -Following California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, 50-acre blaze broke out in the Bonny Doon area of Santa Cruz County.
    -Several people north of Santa Cruz reported to be evacuated.
