Strong earthquake near Shillong, Meghalaya, India on March 2, 2013




M 5.5 earthquake shakes India-Bangladesh today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Epicenter was located 101 km SSE from Shillong.

Tremor was strongest in Sylhet, a major city in north-eastern Bangladesh. It was widely felt across Assam, Meghalaya and Bangla. Read comment below and consider adding your felt report if you are from the earthquake area.

GDACS has issued an Orange Alert in India regarding this earthquake. Alert refers that earthquake near Shillong can have a medium humanitarian impact based on the magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability. Around 12,950,000 people are living within 100 km radius.

M 5.5 strong earthquake shakes India-Bangladesh today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter 46 km ESE from Sylhet (Bangladesh) and 101 km from Shillong (India). It was 29.3 miles deep.

Following USGS Pager Map, light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Karimganj, Hailakandi, Lala, Dharmanagar, Silchar, Maulavi Bazar, Kailashahar and Sylhet. Similarly people of Agartala, Dispur, Imphal and Shillong will have felt weak shaking of MMI III.

  1. I was in sylhet, Bangladesh. I felt like Im almost dead.. I'd never saw that much strong earthquake in my whole life..
